The Ice Cream
High Lawn Farm makes seriously rich ice cream at 16% butterfat with minimal air mixed in (30% overrun), making it super dense and creamy. Their flavors change seasonally and showcase local ingredients, including Purple Cow (a mix of blueberry, blackberry, and chocolate chips) and special blends made with Tunnel City Coffee.
The Place
Located in the heart of the Berkshires in Lee, Massachusetts, High Lawn Farm’s Farmstead Creamery Shop welcomes visitors daily. Grab scoops, pints, or cheese plates and enjoy them at picnic tables with views of cow pastures. Self-guided barn tours let you see calves and check out their milking systems.
The Story
This isn’t just any ice cream shop. High Lawn Farm goes back over 150 years when it was built by Elizur Smith on what was once considered “poor acreage.” Today, the 1,500 acres are lush and green where Jersey cows thrive on farm-grown crops. The farm is family-owned and features a 100% Jersey cattle herd, known for producing nutrient-dense milk.
Not Just Ice Cream
Beyond scoops, High Lawn Farm offers:
- Slow-churned butter and cultured ghee
- Farmstead cheeses
- Jersey milk with no antibiotics or added hormones
- Seasonal offerings like eggnog
Fun Farm Activities
Visitors can enjoy an ice cream cone or cheese board at one of their picnic tables as the Jersey cows graze in the nearby fields. Meet the Jersey cattle herd by visiting their Milking Barn and Nursery Barn – a family-friendly experience. High Lawn Farm won “Best of the Berkshires” for their Premium Ice Cream.
As one visitor put it, the farm offers “Family fun with ice cream and cows!” in a “super picturesque” setting that feels “very quintessentially Berkshires.”
