A Family Tradition in South Chatham
Tucked away in an old schoolhouse in South Chatham, Short ‘n’ Sweet Ice Cream has been making summer memories for 33 years. Started by Jan and John Newton in 1991, the shop is now run by their daughter Becky and her husband Ian, keeping it all in the family.
What Makes It Special
The shop serves Richardson’s Ice Cream in huge portions—even the “kiddy size” is enough for most adults. Popular flavors include:
- Milky Way
- Death by Chocolate
- Mississippi Mud (coffee ice cream loaded with nuts and fudge)
- Butter Crunch
- Coffee Kahlua
Fun Touches
The old schoolhouse vibe isn’t just for show—you’ll find mini school desks inside and a FREE jukebox playing hits from the 50s through 70s. It’s cash-only (ATM available), adding to its old-school charm.
Community Favorite
Located at 2334 Main St, it’s a hit with:
- Chatham Anglers baseball fans after games
- Cyclists taking a break from the Chatham Spur Bike Path
- Families looking for a sweet treat
The shop is open May through October, with weekend hours until 9:30 PM. In 2024, they raised $3,000 for the Chatham Angel Fund during their season-closing event.
If you have allergies, don’t worry—staff takes nut and egg allergy concerns seriously with careful serving protocols.
