A Cape Cod Classic
Located at 538 Falmouth Road in Mashpee, Smitty’s Homemade Ice Cream has been delighting Cape Cod visitors and locals for over three decades. This beloved shop is part of a small local chain that represents the authentic Cape Cod ice cream experience.
Fresh Beginnings
Founded in 1992 by Richard “Smitty” Smith, this ice cream destination started in a tiny 14×14 space in East Falmouth. After years working at Sunday School Ice Cream and then UPS, Smitty followed his passion back to ice cream and built a business that expanded to multiple locations across the Cape, including Mashpee, East Orleans, and Sandwich. As of 2024, the shop is under new ownership, bringing fresh energy while maintaining the beloved traditions.
Handcrafted Quality
What sets Smitty’s apart is their commitment to making all ice cream in-house. This dedication to craftsmanship is evident in every scoop, with generous portions that keep customers coming back for more.
Flavor Paradise
With approximately 20-25 flavors typically available at the Mashpee location, Smitty’s offers something for every taste. Customer favorites include black raspberry, amaretto cherry chip, banana Oreo, and coffee Oreo. Their sundaes receive special praise, particularly those topped with homemade whipped cream and fresh ingredients. Some non-dairy options are also available, though selection may vary.
Beyond Scoops
Smitty’s has expanded beyond traditional ice cream to offer ice cream cakes and other frozen treats. Hand-packed quarts are available for those who want to enjoy Smitty’s at home, a popular option for vacationers staying nearby.
A Cape Cod Tradition
More than just an ice cream shop, Smitty’s has become part of many families’ Cape Cod traditions. The previous owner once noted that some grandchildren visiting the Cape claimed they wanted to see Smitty’s first, then their grandparents! This special place has created sweet memories for generations of visitors, making it a must-visit destination during any Cape Cod trip.
