Plant-Based Pioneers in Harwich Port
Sweet Izzy made history when it opened at 296 MA-28 in Harwich Port in 2020 as Cape Cod’s first fully plant-based ice cream shop. Founded by local couple Elizabeth and Michael Doucette and named after their daughter Isabelle, this special spot serves ice cream that’s dairy-free, gluten-free, and soy-free.
What Makes It Special
Born from Elizabeth’s own dairy intolerance, Sweet Izzy recreates classic ice cream flavors using oat milk and coconut milk bases:
- Hard-pack favorites like Coffee Oreo, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, and Salted Caramel
- Chocolate and vanilla soft-serve (plus twist option)
- Handmade gluten-free waffle cones that earn praise for their crunch
- Sundaes with homemade oat-milk fudge sauce
- Banana splits and milkshakes
All items are vegan and free from most common allergens (except coconut).
The Experience
Sweet Izzy brings Cape Cod charm with its pink-and-gold accents and cedar shingles. The takeout-only Harwich Port location offers outdoor seating for enjoying treats in the fresh air.
The shop runs seasonally, focusing mainly on summer months when Cape Cod sees its biggest crowds.
Elizabeth (a holistic nutritionist) and Michael (formerly in finance) spent over a year perfecting their recipes before opening. They’ve created a place that regularly celebrates customer “firsts” – like a child having their first ice cream cone in 15 years due to allergies.
The concept proved so popular that they opened a second location in Denver in 2023, expanding their reach beyond Cape Cod.
